An office chair harms your health when it fails to support your body properly during long hours of sitting. The five most common warning signs are: pain in the lower back, tingling or numbness in the legs, tension in the neck and shoulders, constant fidgeting, and a feeling of exhaustion at the end of the day. If you recognise even one of these signs, it is time to check whether your chair really gives you the right ergonomic support.

Heka Interior is the office-furniture brand of Hit Preless d.o.o. from Slovenia, a company that has produced furniture since 1986. With our own production, logistics and installation and more than 80 employees, we have ergonomically equipped over 1,200 workstations at NLB, while our references also include Triglav and Volvo. Every product is made in Slovenia and fully adaptable to your build and the way you work.

How do I know my office chair is harming my health?

A chair harms your health when your body compensates for poor support all day long. The clearest signs are lower-back pain, numb or heavy legs, tension in the neck and shoulders, restlessness while sitting, and unexplained fatigue. These sensations are not random – they are your body reacting to a poor posture. Ergonomists recommend taking the signs seriously and adjusting the chair to your build instead of getting used to them.

Why does my lower back hurt at the end of the day?

Pain or stiffness in the lower back is the most common sign that a chair lacks proper lumbar support. Standard chairs often have no adjustable support for the lumbar region, so your back is left without support exactly where it needs it most. As a result, the body tenses its muscles all day to stay upright, which shows up as pain in the evening.

Ergonomic chairs are designed to support the natural curve of the spine. Models such as Clever Evo feature a height-adjustable lumbar support that adapts to your posture and reduces pressure on the lower back. Learn more in our guide to office chairs with lumbar support.

Why do my legs go numb or tingle after sitting for a long time?

Tingling, numbness or a feeling of heavy legs is often the result of pressure on the back of the thighs. The cause is usually a seat that is too deep or too shallow, pressing on blood vessels and restricting circulation. The solution is a chair with adjustable seat depth, which lets you adapt the distance between the seat edge and your knees to your build.

Ergonomists recommend leaving about two to three fingers of space between the seat edge and the back of the knee. Chairs such as Aria offer a slider for seat-depth adjustment, allowing precise fit. This relieves the thighs and keeps the legs well supplied with blood even after several hours of work.

Why do I have constant tension in my neck and shoulders?

Chronic tension in the neck and shoulders appears when a chair has no adjustable headrest or suitable armrests. In that case the shoulders take on the burden of holding the head and arms in the right position, which strains the muscles throughout the day. Over time this tension can contribute to a feeling of fatigue and reduced concentration.

The solution is a chair with an adjustable headrest and armrests that adapt to height, width, depth and angle, as on the ErgoFlex model. When the arms are properly supported, the shoulders relax and the neck is no longer under constant tension.

Does constant fidgeting mean my chair does not fit me?

If you keep moving, cross your legs, lean forwards and backwards and never find a comfortable position, this is not just a habit – your body is telling you the chair does not suit your build and the way you work. Constant fidgeting is a sign that you cannot find a position in which the chair truly supports you.

This is where active sitting helps. Active ergonomic chairs such as Clever Evo have a mechanism that allows controlled movement while seated – the chair responds to the weight of your body and permits gentle tilting in all directions. This activates the deep muscles and makes movement natural rather than distracting.

Why am I exhausted at the end of the day even though I mostly sit?

Surprisingly, an unsuitable chair can contribute to a feeling of fatigue. When the body compensates for a poor position all day – tensing muscles, leaning and seeking support – it uses up energy that should go into your work. The result is exhaustion at the end of the day, even though you were not physically active.

An ergonomic chair with good support reduces this hidden effort. Correct lumbar support, an adjustable headrest and a breathable mesh backrest keep the body in a natural position without extra strain. The effect is even better if you occasionally combine sitting with standing work at a sit-stand desk – read more in our guide on whether a sit-stand desk is worth it.

What should I look for when choosing a new ergonomic chair?

When choosing the right chair, look for adjustable lumbar support, adjustable seat depth, a headrest, quality armrests and a mechanism that allows movement while seated. A breathable backrest surface that prevents overheating during long sitting also matters.

  • Adjustable lumbar support for the natural curve of the spine
  • Seat-depth slider to relieve the thighs
  • Headrest and armrests for relaxed shoulders
  • Active-sitting mechanism for movement while you work
  • Breathable backrest for comfort throughout the day

You will find a detailed overview of the criteria in our guide on how to choose an ergonomic office chair.

Frequently asked questions

Can correct chair adjustment remove these signs without buying a new chair?

Often, correctly adjusting your existing chair already improves how you feel. Set the seat height so your feet rest on the floor, align the lumbar support with the natural curve of your back, and adjust the armrests so the shoulders are relaxed. If your chair lacks these adjustments, a replacement makes sense. Our step-by-step guide on how to adjust an office chair can help.

How much does an ergonomic office chair from Heka Interior cost?

The price depends on the model and configuration, so most chairs are offered on request. Every chair is made to your choice of fabric, colour and additional equipment, so the final price is tailored to your configuration. Contact us for an exact quote, and we will also advise which model best suits your build and the way you work.

Can I try the chair in my own office before buying?

Yes. At Heka Interior we believe you should test a chair in your real working environment, not just for a few minutes in a shop. That is why we offer a free 7-day trial: we deliver the chair to your address, you try it for a week, and if it is not for you, we collect it back at no cost. Order the trial on our free trial page.

Are Heka Interior chairs really made in Slovenia?
