A proper ergonomic chair must have at least 6 adjustable elements: seat height, seat depth, synchronous mechanism, adjustable lumbar support, 4D armrests, and a recommended headrest. These elements adapt to your body and type of work - not the other way around. In this guide, we explain how to distinguish a true ergonomic chair from marketing claims.

At Heka, we equip Slovenian companies with ergonomic furniture for 34 years. Our chairs are in 1,200 NLB workstations, in the meeting rooms of Triglav and Volvo, and in Marriott and Radisson hotel rooms across Europe (more about hotel projects at hit-preless.com). Below, we share what we've learned.

What does "ergonomic chair" actually mean?

An ergonomic chair is a chair that adapts to the user's body - not the other way around. A true ergonomic chair has at least 5 adjustable elements:

  • Seat height - so your feet rest comfortably on the floor and your knees are at a 90° angle
  • Seat depth - so there is a 2-3 finger gap between your knee and the edge of the seat
  • Lumbar support - adjustable in height and depth, supporting the natural curve of the lower back
  • Synchronous mechanism - seat and backrest move in a 2:1 ratio (backrest faster than seat)
  • Armrests - 4D adjustable (height, width, depth, angle)
  • Headrest (recommended) - relieves cervical spine during prolonged sitting

A chair without these elements is not ergonomic - even if it has "ergonomic" or "executive" written on it. You will feel the difference after a few hours of sitting.

5 key factors when choosing

1. Synchronous mechanism (and not just "rocking")

The synchronous mechanism is the heart of an ergonomic chair. When you lean back, the backrest reclines more than the seat (2:1 ratio) - this means your knees remain at a 90° angle, and your spine receives natural support. Cheaper chairs have a "rocking" mechanism where the seat and backrest tilt together - which tires the legs in the long run.

At Heka, all our active ergonomic chairs feature a synchronous mechanism, including Clever Evo, Logic, and Ergoflex.

2. Lumbar support - adjustable, not fixed

Lumbar support must be adjustable in height and depth. Every person has a different back height and shape. Fixed lumbar support, found in cheaper chairs, only supports some users - causing additional tension for others.

When choosing, check: can you move the lumbar support up/down by at least 5-7 cm, and can you adjust how deeply it protrudes into your back.

3. Seat materials: mesh or fabric?

Both have their advantages:

  • Mesh - better ventilation, suitable for warm environments and people who quickly overheat. Modern meshes are durable and retain their shape.
  • Fabric or leather - softer, warmer to the touch, more suitable for colder rooms.

At Heka, we offer both — premium mesh (e.g. Clever Evo or Logic with a mesh backrest) and fabric or leather (Ergoflex with a leather seat). You can view all fabrics and leathers in our material library.

4. 4D armrests

Armrests must be adjustable in four directions:

  1. Height (up/down)
  2. Width (closer/further from body)
  3. Depth (forward/backward)
  4. Angle (rotation)

Cheaper chairs only have height adjustment - which means the armrests often force elbows into an incorrect position. True 4D armrests adapt to every work task: typing, handwriting, reading.

5. Warranty and material quality

A premium ergonomic chair is not a consumable item. It must withstand 8+ hours of use every day, for years and years. Important factors are:

  • Manufacturer's warranty - all our chairs come with a 3-year warranty
  • Gas lift - TÜV certified or equivalent
  • Mechanism - tested for at least 100,000 cycles
  • Serviceability - a local manufacturer can deliver spare parts even after 5 years

Heka chairs are manufactured in Slovenia, in our factory in Medvode. With in-house production, we ensure long-term serviceability - which is often a problem with imported chairs.

Which Heka chair is right for your type of work?

All our chairs are ergonomic - they differ in stylistic character and additional functions. Below is a quick selection by usage profile:

Programmer, editor, designer (8+ hours of sitting, intensive typing)

Clever Evo - flagship active ergonomic chair with mesh. Adjustable headrest, 4D armrests, synchronous mechanism. The most common choice for IT teams.

User of a standing desk (sit-stand workflow)

Orange - a chair designed for use with a standing desk. An ideal choice when switching between sitting and standing positions - it adapts to a dynamic work rhythm and relieves the spine during frequent position changes.

Office worker (universal choice)

Logic - a classic active ergonomic chair with a focus on versatility. Various combinations of seat, backrest, and colors.

Active sitting, dynamic work

Move.me - an innovative chair that encourages micro-movements while sitting. Activates core muscles, helps with back problems.

Heavier users (up to 150 kg)

Ergoflex - reinforced construction, larger seat and backrest, all ergonomic functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a good ergonomic chair cost?

Premium ergonomic chair of Slovenian manufacture costs from 500 to 1,500 EUR, depending on the configuration. The lower end is quality active chairs (Logic, Move.me), the upper end is flagship active chairs with mesh and a headrest (Clever Evo) or chairs with a leather seat (Ergoflex). Below 300 EUR, do not expect serious ergonomics - adjustable functions will be missing.

How long does an ergonomic chair last?

With intensive 8+ hour use: 8-15 years. Heka chairs come with a 3-year warranty, but we expect them to last significantly longer. With in-house production in Medvode, we ensure serviceability and spare parts even after the warranty expires. For the German market, support is handled by Hit Preless GmbH.

Does an ergonomic chair really help with back pain?

Yes - if properly adjusted. The chair will not cure existing problems, but it can prevent new injuries and relieve the spine during daily sitting. For existing problems, we recommend consulting a physiotherapist + an ergonomic chair as a supplement.

Mesh or Fabric - Which is Healthier?

Both are equally healthy, if they have the correct structure. The difference is mainly in thermal comfort: mesh ventilates better and is more suitable for warm environments. Fabric is warmer and softer.

When is it Time to Replace Your Chair?

Signs it's time: the chair squeaks, the gas lift doesn't hold its height, the seat foam is weakened and visibly indented, the mechanism doesn't work smoothly, new back pains have appeared that weren't there before. You typically exceed the lifespan after 7-10 years of intensive use.
